How far is Wellness Massage Spa from Newberry?

Roughly 17 miles, or about 25 to 30 minutes by car from downtown Newberry. The studio is in southwest Gainesville on the west side of I-75, so you never get on the interstate or cross it. Most of the drive is east on W Newberry Road (SR 26) through Jonesville, then south on Tower Road (SW 75th Street) toward SW Archer Road.

There is a second way in that stays on one road for most of the trip: south on US 27/41 to Archer, then northeast on SW Archer Road (SR 24). It ends at the same corner in about the same time, so use whichever one your day already puts you on.

Finding Suite 20

The full address is 5750 SW 75th Ct Ste 20, Gainesville, FL 32608. SW 75th Court is a short spur off Tower Road near its intersection with SW Archer Road, and the studio is Suite 20 in a small retail building there. The sign over the door reads Wellness Massage & Spa.

When to leave Newberry

We are open 9:30 AM to 10 PM every day, Sunday included. Before a long evening session, check the latest open start time on the booking page or call (352) 339-6646. Setting off 40 minutes before your start time covers the drive with a little room to spare, and if traffic holds you up, call the studio from the road.

Is a 90 or 120 minute massage worth the drive?

For an ache that keeps coming back, usually yes. The round trip from Newberry takes close to an hour whatever you book. With a 60 minute massage you spend about as long in the car as on the table; with 120 minutes you get twice the table time for the same drive.

A longer session also costs no more per minute. From 60 minutes up, every body massage on the menu works out to about $1.33 a minute, so two hours costs exactly twice one. The 30 and 45 minute sessions cost more per minute, and they make the least sense after half an hour on the road.

What the extra time buys is attention to more than one place. In an hour, a therapist can work your back thoroughly or cover your whole body at an even pace, and rarely both. At 90 minutes there is room for a full-body session with a long stretch on the area that hurts, and at 120 minutes neither part has to be rushed. Say at the start where you want the extra time to go.

Can massage help chronic pain?

It may, modestly, and the relief tends to be short-term. Chronic pain is common: NCCIH's summary of the 2019 National Health Interview Survey puts it at 20.4 percent of U.S. adults, and 7.4 percent have pain that limits work or daily life on most days. Massage is the approach many people assume is best proven, and how well it holds up depends on where the pain is.

A single massage is unlikely to change a chronic pain problem. In the fibromyalgia research, the benefit appeared only when massage continued for weeks.

Low-back pain

Here the evidence is weakest. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reviewed 20 studies in 2016 and found massage helped chronic low-back pain, but rated the strength of that evidence as low. The American College of Physicians' 2017 guideline lists massage as an option for acute and subacute low-back pain, and leaves it off the list for chronic.

Neck and shoulders

The results are clearer here, and the dose seems to matter. NCCIH's digest of the massage research describes a 2014 trial of 228 people with chronic neck pain in which 60 minute sessions several times a week worked better than shorter or less frequent ones. A 2013 review of 12 studies with 757 participants found massage beat inactive treatments for neck and shoulder pain, though the shoulder benefit faded.

Arthritis and fibromyalgia

A 2017 review of 7 trials with 352 participants found low-to-moderate quality evidence that massage eased osteoarthritis pain and improved function, mostly in the knee, yet the American College of Rheumatology and the Arthritis Foundation weakly recommend against massage for hip or knee osteoarthritis. For fibromyalgia, a 2014 review of 9 studies with 404 participants found less pain, anxiety and depression, but only when massage continued for at least 5 weeks, and no change in sleep.

Should you see a doctor before booking massage for ongoing pain?

Yes, if the pain is new, getting worse or has no explanation yet. A massage near Newberry can sit alongside that care, and NCCIH's guidance on complementary approaches comes down to exactly that: use them with conventional treatment, and never as a reason to put off a diagnosis.

Serious problems after massage are rare; among the cases NCCIH cites, such as a blood clot, a nerve injury or a bone fracture, some involved vigorous deep tissue work or people already at higher risk of injury. That makes your health history worth telling the therapist before a long, firm session, in detail.

  • You take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder.
  • You have had a blood clot, a fracture or surgery in recent months.
  • You have osteoporosis, or numbness or tingling that runs down an arm or a leg.
  • You are being treated for a condition that affects your skin, circulation or bones.

Deep tissue or Swedish for a long session?

Choose Deep Tissue for one stubborn area and Swedish for a whole body that feels worn down. Deep Tissue Massage reaches the deeper layers of muscle, though deep does not have to mean hard pressure. Swedish Massage is the most common form of massage, used for relaxation and stress reduction.

Relaxation, Sports and Reflexology Massage are booked at the same lengths and prices. At 90 or 120 minutes you can ask for full-body work with extra time on your low back or neck, and it helps to say early how firm you want it. If the pressure hurts, say so and it comes down. Cupping can be added to a massage for $30, and essential oils of ginger, rose or lavender for $10; call (352) 339-6646 or ask at the studio.

  1. Pick the style and length on the booking page: 90 or 120 minutes, in Deep Tissue, Swedish, Relaxation, Sports or Reflexology.
  2. Choose any available therapist, or a specific one if you have a preference.
  3. Start times run in 15 minute steps, so you can match the appointment to the drive. A 75 minute session is booked by calling the studio.
  4. Pay at the studio; nothing is charged online.

Questions people ask

How much is a 2 hour massage in Gainesville?

A 120 minute body massage is $160 at Wellness Massage Spa, and a 90 minute one is $120. Both can be booked online in Deep Tissue, Swedish, Relaxation, Sports or Reflexology.

Can I book a 75 minute massage online?

No. The 75 minute session is $100 and is booked by phone on (352) 339-6646, along with the 30 and 45 minute lengths. Online booking covers 60, 90 and 120 minutes.

Does massage help chronic back pain?

It may bring short-term relief, but the evidence for chronic low-back pain is weak. A 2016 review of 20 studies rated it as low strength, and the American College of Physicians' 2017 guideline does not list massage for chronic low-back pain. Use it alongside your clinician's plan rather than in place of it.

Do I pay when I book online?
