What is a four hands massage?
It is one massage given by two therapists at the same time. At Wellness Massage Spa, Four Hands Massage runs 60 minutes and costs $160, and the studio describes it as a synchronized massage: the two licensed massage therapists work in step with each other instead of taking turns.
With two people working, more of your body gets attention at any moment. One therapist can work your shoulders and back while the other works your legs and feet, or the two can match each other on either side of your spine. Over the hour that comes to 120 minutes of hands-on work.
Two therapists working in step give one guest an hour of attention from both sides of the table.
What it feels like
The first few minutes can feel strange, because there is no single place for your attention to follow. Some people find that is what lets them stop thinking about the day; others find two pairs of hands more than they want. If you have not had a massage in a while, a 60 minute Swedish or Relaxation Massage is the gentler way to find out how you like to be worked on.
Who it suits
It suits a treat you plan ahead, an hour for yourself when you rarely take one off, or a day when you want the whole body covered in a single hour. It is booked for one guest, so if two of you want to be massaged in the same room, book a Couples Massage instead, compared below.
How long is the drive from Alachua?
About 30 to 35 minutes by car from downtown Alachua. The usual way is I-75 south: join it at Exit 399 (US 441), stay on for the 15 miles to Exit 384 at Archer Road, then go west on SW Archer Road for about 3 miles to Tower Road (SW 75th Street). The studio is just off Tower Road, west of the interstate.
To stay off I-75, take US 441 and NW 43rd Street down to W Newberry Road, head west to Tower Road, then turn south. It has more traffic lights and usually takes longer.
Coming down after work
We are open 9:30 AM to 10 PM every day, so an evening massage near Alachua is realistic on a workday; check the booking page for the latest open start time, or call (352) 339-6646. Give yourself extra time at rush hour, when I-75 is slower.
Is a four hands massage worth $160?
It depends what you want from the money. On our menu, $160 buys 120 minutes of therapist time in three different shapes: two therapists on you for one hour, two therapists on two guests for one hour, or one therapist on you for two hours.
Four Hands is the one to book when you want more hands at once, and it comes in a single length, 60 minutes. A Couples Massage is the same price for two guests side by side with one therapist each, which works out to $80 a person. A 120 minute body massage gives one therapist twice as long, which suits slow, unhurried work or deeper attention on one problem area.
The trip itself can settle the choice. If you are coming down from Alachua with a partner, the couples booking turns one drive into two massages. If you are coming alone and want the most attention in the shortest time, book Four Hands; if you would rather stay longer, book the 120 minute session.
| Booking | Guests | Therapists | Length | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Four Hands Massage | 1 | 2, working together | 60 minutes | Full-body attention in one hour |
| Couples Massage | 2, side by side | 2, one each | 60 minutes | Two people unwinding in one room |
| Body massage | 1 | 1 | 120 minutes | Unhurried full-body work or a focus area |
Can a massage help with stress and anxiety?
Research suggests it may, mostly in the short term. A 2004 meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin pooled 37 randomized studies and found that a single massage lowered state anxiety, blood pressure and heart rate. Those studies tested ordinary massage with one therapist; we know of no trial of four hands specifically, so read the findings as what massage in general may do.
Why heart rate and blood pressure matter
They are the markers of the body's stress response. Under stress the heart speeds up, breathing quickens, blood pressure rises and muscles tighten. NCCIH calls the reverse the relaxation response, in which heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen use and stress hormones come down, so the changes measured after a single massage point in that direction.
One session or a course
The larger effects in that analysis came from repeated sessions: reductions in trait anxiety, meaning a person's general tendency to feel anxious, and in depression. The American Massage Therapy Association points to smaller studies in the same direction, including a significant fall in blood pressure after a single 15 minute chair massage at work.
The room and the touch
Mayo Clinic Health System says massage can be an effective part of treatment for people dealing with depression, anxiety or heavy stress. Mayo Clinic's longer review of massage and mental health credits part of the effect to the setting around the hands: a quiet room, human touch and a caring therapist. A four hands session gives you more of the touch, and whether that adds anything measurable has not been studied.
What about cortisol?
Treat any promise about the stress hormone with caution. The 2004 analysis found no drop in cortisol after a single massage, and Mayo Clinic's review of massage and mental health says only that several studies suggest a decrease in some stress chemicals, cortisol among them.
Who should check with a doctor before a four hands massage?
Anyone with a heart, blood or bone condition. Mayo Clinic advises talking to your doctor first if you have had a recent heart attack, have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners, and taking care with a recent blood clot, a fracture or severe osteoporosis. Two therapists at once means pressure in more places at the same moment, so ask for lighter work at the start if you want it.
For diagnosed anxiety or depression, massage belongs alongside your treatment and never in place of it. NCCIH's page on stress advises talking to a professional if you are struggling to cope or symptoms will not go away, and to call, text or chat 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, if you are in immediate distress.
- Book the 60 minute Four Hands Massage on the booking page, or call (352) 339-6646.
- Pick a time a few days out, because the booking needs two therapists free in the same hour.
- Tell both therapists at the start what pressure you want and any area to avoid.
- Pay at the studio; nothing is charged online.
Questions people ask
Is there a four hands massage near Alachua?
Yes. Wellness Massage Spa, 5750 SW 75th Ct Ste 20 in southwest Gainesville, offers Four Hands Massage with two licensed massage therapists. It is about 30 to 35 minutes from Alachua: I-75 south from Exit 399 to Exit 384, then west on SW Archer Road to Tower Road.
How much does a four hands massage cost?
$160 for 60 minutes, which is the only length offered. You can book it online or by phone, and you pay at the studio rather than when you book.
What is the difference between a four hands massage and a couples massage?
Four Hands puts two therapists on one guest. A Couples Massage puts two guests side by side in one room, with one therapist each. Both are 60 minutes and $160, so a couples session works out to $80 a person.
Is a four hands massage better than a regular massage?
No research shows that it is. You get two therapists' attention at once and more of your body worked at any moment, which some people love and others find too busy. If you would rather have longer work on one area, a 120 minute massage costs the same $160.
Can massage help anxiety?
It may ease anxiety in the short term. A 2004 analysis of 37 studies found a single massage lowered state anxiety, blood pressure and heart rate, with larger effects from a course of sessions. Use it alongside treatment for an anxiety disorder, and call or text 988 in a crisis.
Can I book a four hands massage the same day?
Sometimes, if two therapists are free in the same hour. Online booking shows the open start times in 15 minute steps. For the widest choice, book a few days ahead or call (352) 339-6646.
